Brewster’s Millions Sequel with Richard Pryor’s Children Sets Release Date

‘Tis the season to be filthy rich, if Brewster can only spend all that money. The long-in-production follow-up to the late Richard Pryor and John Candy’s vastly underrated comedy classic Brewster’s Millions has officially wrapped production, and the sequel will drop just prior to the holidays on December 5. Brewster’s Millions: Christmas is not only a BET+ Original, but it’s truly a family affair, starring both Pryor’s real-life daughter, Rain, and his son, Richard Pryor Jr.

While Pryor, Jr. admits his isn’t a large part in the new Brewster’s Millions story, the iconic comedian’s son will be portraying the same character (Monty Brewster) his father did in the 1985 movie, which came out in theaters nearly 40 years ago. Pryor Jr. said (via Deadline):

“As the son of Richard Pryor,
I was so proud to have the opportunity to step into the shoes, although briefly of the unforgettable character [Montgomery] Monty Brewster.
Truly an honor and a pleasure working with Joseph Nasser and Matthew Nasser.”

Pryor’s daughter, Rain, portrays the character of Opal in the holiday film. And she was honored to have worked on the BET+ Original project, as well. Rain added by saying:

Working in Brewster’s Millions: Christmas has been an honor. From the cast to the director Patricia Cuffie-Jones and the producers Joseph and Matthew Nasser, it felt like family. I know my daddy was watching from above.

Monty Brewster’s Niece Will Take It from Here

While both Richard Pryor’s daughter Rain and son, Richard Pryor Jr., are featured in the upcoming BET+ Original film, it falls on the shoulders of China Anne McClain to portray Monty Brewster’s (Pryor) niece, Morgan. And presumably, Morgan stands to inherit Monty’s fortune if she can abide by the terms of the will, just as her uncle had to do almost 40 years ago. “Brewster’s Millions: Christmas follows the story of Morgan Brewster
, as she faces a unique and challenging task to inherit her uncle Montgomery’s fortune before Christmas. As the characters navigate the charming chaos of the holiday season,
they learn the true meaning of love, faith, and family by giving instead of receiving.”

Patricia Cuffie-Jones serves as both the director and screenwriter of Brewster’s Millions: Christmas, which comes on the 40-year-old heels of one of Richard Pryor and John Candy’s most underrated movies. However, it’s worth noting that the source material for Brewster’s Millions (1985) is almost 125 years old, and it was originally penned by author George Barr McCutcheon in his 1902 novel of the same name.

Sadly, Pryor’s original portrayal of the Hackensack Bulls’ minor-league baseball player, who becomes a multi-millionaire, didn’t fare all that well with fans or critics. Today, Brewster’s Millions registers only 38% on the Tomatometer, and the film holds a 56% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, despite making $45.8 million during its theatrical release (per Box Office Mojo).
