Cate Blanchett Viral Moment Closing Car Door on ‘Disclaimer’ Co-Star

Whether it be through Volpi Cup-winning performances in films like I’m Not There or Tár, or shutting down the red carpet in striking couture ensembles, Cate Blanchett never fails to bring the drama to the Venice Film Festival. But this year, the Oscar winner also delivered a bit of levity.

During a press conference to chat up her latest starring role, this one courtesy of the small screen in Disclaimer, the new Alfonso Cuáron limited series for Apple TV+, Blanchett quipped that she just might be “going naked” to the red carpet premiere on Thursday evening. Of course, she was just joking, and the question about her fashion strategy had serious undertones in the wake of a gown she wore to the Cannes Film Festival in May (and whether or not it telegraphed her support of Palestine). But the answer was enough to have the festival press in stitches if only for a moment.

Hours later, Blanchett had online fans howling after a video surfaced on social media showing the actress arriving at the Disclaimer premiere at Palazzo del Cinema in a chic Lexus ride and accidentally closing the car’s door on co-star Kevin Kline. Cuáron was quick to the rescue and alerted Blanchett as they teamed up to remedy the silly situation that went viral on X. Though her back was to the camera, it appeared that even she was laughing. Crisis averted!

As for Disclaimer, the festival screening featured the first four episodes and the audience erupted with a lengthy standing ovation when it was over. Told in seven chapters, the Apple Studios series is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Renée Knight. The ensemble cast includes Sacha Baron Cohen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Lesley Manville, Louis Partridge, Leila George, South Korean star Hoyeon and Indira Varma as the narrator.

It casts Blanchett as an acclaimed journalist, Catherine Ravenscroft, who has built a reputation revealing the misdeeds and transgressions of others. When she receives a novel from an unknown author, she is horrified to realize she is now the main character in a story that exposes her darkest secrets. Disclaimer will be released worldwide on Apple TV+ on Oct. 11 with the first two episodes, followed by new episodes every Friday.
