Daisy Ridley isn’t worried about carrying the new Star Wars movie on her own. When the actress first portrayed the character of Rey in Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens, it became apparent very quickly that the Force-sensitive scavenger was the main protagonist among the new cast of characters. Nevertheless, Ridley had the likes of Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac and John Boyega to help lighten the load — not to mention Harrison Ford. But Ridley is cool with putting the new Star Wars project on her highly capable shoulders. When Ridley was asked if it would be weird without Driver, Isaac and Boyega co-starring, the actress said in an exclusive interview with Variety:
“No, because I don’t know what is what, or who is who [in the new Star Wars film]. So much has happened for me [since the sequel trilogy]. I feel like a grown-up now. When I first started, I was, like, 20. I was the youngest on set. It took me the first two ‘Star Wars’ films to feel worthy of being there. Now, I’m in my 30s. The whole thing feels quite different. I’ve been able to work with other filmmakers, and hopefully, I’ve got better as a performer.”
Ridley portrayed the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) in all three installments of J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson’s Star Wars sequel trilogy. The twist, of course, is that Rey takes on the family name of Skywalker at the conclusion of Episode IX in order to keep the lineage of Luke (Mark Hamill) and Leia (Carrie Fisher) alive and well after their respective deaths.
Star Wars X Will Be ‘Cool as Sh—’
Daisy Ridley has inked a deal to reprise the role of Rey Skywalker in a new Star Wars film, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is tasked with being the film franchise’s first female director. But while Ridley is excited by the prospect of working with Obaid-Chinoy on what is ostensibly known as Episode X, the actress isn’t sure what to expect outside of a storyline that “is cool as sh—.” Ridley said in the same interview:
“The short answer is, I don’t know. I’m excited to do the job, but not because Sharmeen is a woman. Her documentaries are amazing. Her idea for the story is cool as sh—. No spoilers, but she gave me a rundown of the entire story. If it weren’t amazing, I would have been like, ‘Okay, call me in five years.’ But it’s worthwhile.”
