‘I Haven’t Seen Anything Like It Before’

‘I Haven’t Seen Anything Like It Before’

Summary

  • The Life of Chuck is a unique and different film that Jacob Tremblay is excited for people to watch.
  • Tremblay had a great time working with director Mike Flanagan on set, who keeps things fun but serious when needed.
  • Tremblay watched Flangan’s previous film, Before I Wake, while filming The Life of Chuck, and memories from the set came flooding back.

The third Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan is inching our way, and that’s reason to be excited. Flanagan has gained acclaim for his previous King projects – Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game – and if history repeats itself, The Life of Chuck will also impress. Jacob Tremblay, who stars in Flanagan’s upcoming film, recently joined us here at MovieWeb to discuss his new movie, Cold Copy. During that conversation, we couldn’t resist and asked Tremblay if he could share anything about The Life of Chuck:

“It’s just I had an amazing time on that set. One of the things I love about Mike is that he keeps things very, very fun and very kind of casual, but it’s serious when it needs to be serious on set. So, it’s really fun. I’m super excited for people to watch this film. I haven’t seen or read anything like it before. It’s so, so unique and so different.”

The Life of Chuck marks Tremblay’s third collaboration with Mike Flanagan. He previously appeared in Flanagan’s Doctor Sleep and Before I Wake. In the latter, Tremblay starred as Cody Morgan, a foster child placed in a new home and terrified of falling asleep. We asked if he’d seen the horror movie before, as he was only 10 when he appeared in it:

“I watched it once when I was younger. And then I just actually revisited it while I was filming ‘The Life of Chuck.’ Because I remember talking with Mike about a lot of the things about that set, and I was so young, there were things I couldn’t remember. And there were so many memories that started coming back. ‘Okay, I do remember that. Do you remember that?’ So, I rewatched the film just recently when we were filming, which I think was not too long ago. It was November.”

Although Tremblay is just 17, he’s already established an impressive acting resume. He became the youngest nominee for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for his work on 2015’s Room and gained praise for his roles in Wonder and Goodboy.

Mike Flanagan: The Life of Chuck is ‘Deeply Special’

Flanagan’s The Life of Chuck is described as a “genre-bending” story based on a novella from King’s 2020 collection If It Bleeds. The film depicts three chapters in the life of Charles “Chuck” Krantz (portrayed by Tom Hiddleston), a man who grew up in a haunted house. The Life of Chuck also stars Mark Hamill (who is reuniting with Flanagan after The Fall of the House of Usher), Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Karen Gillan (who starred in 2013’s Oculus).

Although no release date has been announced, The Life of Chuck wrapped filming in November. At the time, Flanagan shared his excitement through a post on X:

Flanagan has become a revered name in the horror genre thanks to the success of series like Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and The Haunting of Hill House, and films like Hush and his King adaptations. Critics and audiences have continuously praised his work in the horror sphere, and one notable writer is also a fan: King. About Midnight Mass, the iconic author wrote:

“Mike Flanagan has created a dense, beautifully photographed terror tale that climbs to a high pitch of horror by the 7th and last episode. I believe it starts in 10 days.”

The Life of Chuck won’t be the last Stephen King story Flanagan brings to the screen; he holds the rights to The Dark Tower series.
