New to Netflix on March 7, 2024, Guy Ritchie’s stylish crime comedy The Gentlemen instantly shot to the most-watched list in the U.S. and currently ranks as the third most popular TV show on the platform. A spin-off of Ritchie’s underrated 2019 feature film The Gentlemen, the small-screen adaptation stars Theo James as Eddie Horniman, a noble charmer who uncovers a criminal operation on his inherited English estate.

Between the popular viewership and critical plaudits for the hit crime show (70% Rotten Tomatoes score), fans wonder if The Gentlemen will be renewed for Season 2 or if the show was intended to be completed as an 8-part miniseries. Although Netflix has not officially renewed the show for a second season, new details and developments indicate that Ritchie, James, and the others plan to continue the British crime saga. Here’s everything to know about the fate of The Gentlemen on Netflix.

What Is The Gentlemen?

Created by Guy Ritchie as a spin-off to his 2019 British gangster comedy film of the same name, The Gentlemen stars Theo James as the aristocratic Edward “Eddie” Horniman. Eddie is a former officer who served in the United Nations before ascending to the rank of the 10th Duke of Halstead. When The Gentlemen begins, Eddie learns his father has died, and he has been named as his successor despite being his second son. Eddie’s older brother, Lord Frederick “Freddy” Horniman (Daniel Ings), feels cheated out of his inheritance as the eldest son of the deceased Duke. However, the Duke leaves everything to Eddie due to Freddy’s drug-addled instability.

Eddie’s inheritance includes control of a lavish 15,000-acre estate. The plot of the show kicks into high gear when Eddie discovers a massive marijuana-growing operation on his land. The operation is run by a woman named Susie Glass (Kaya Scodelario), who Eddie learns had a business deal with his father. Torn between keeping up his aristocratic appearance and maintaining a lucrative illegal business, Eddie begins working with Susie to expand the operation while moving off his land. Of course, like any Guy Ritchie gangster story, an unpredictable torrent of hilarity and hyper-violence dashes the best-laid plans.

Is The Gentlemen a Miniseries?

On March 8, 2024, one day after The Gentlemen premiered on Netflix, executive producer Mark Helwig spoke to Deadline about the plans for the show in the future. The first thing worth noting is that The Gentlemen was not conceived as a closed-ended miniseries, nor was it meant to last just one season. Helwig notes that Ritchie and his creative team have started working on ideas for a potential second season and beyond, telling Deadline:

“We have started that process…there are some writers we’ve talked to, certainly lots of discussion with Guy about what he might want to do in a second season, what things to focus on.”

Helwig, who also serves as the Head of Worldwide Television at Miramax, confirms that The Gentlemen was conceived as a multi-season TV show but knows the first season must perform well among viewers to be renewed by Netflix, adding:

“It’s been an active ongoing discussion already what a second season would be…
[even]
spawn some kind of a universe, a Guy Ritchie world,””

While many may know Theo James for his work in Divergent, he has plenty of other movies you can check out.

Helwig isn’t the only one with an opinion on the fate of The Gentlemen moving forward. According to Theo James via Netflix, who dominates the screen as Eddie Horniman:

“That is the beginning of his journey into the heart of darkness. He finally realizes that with power comes death, and he begins to enjoy it… Eddie and Susie just signed the deal with the devil and they’re about to embark on a diabolical journey.”

Meanwhile, Giancarlo Esposito, who plays the wealthy American art collector Stanley Johnston in The Gentlemen, insists that there is more story to tell beyond season 1. Speaking with Digital Spy, Esposito claims:

“Nothing was ever discussed of a second season. But when you’re in the last episode of the first season – a really great scene, I love Ray Winstone – then you know, we have the possibility of going further. And I think the show does as well.”

How The Gentleman Sets Up Season 2

Since its release on March 7, 2024, The Gentlemen has remained among the top three most-viewed Netflix shows in the U.S. While the crime series’ popularity would indicate a slam-dunk decision for Netflix to renew the show, the drama itself sets up a compelling storyline for Season 2 and beyond. The Season 1 finale (evoked by Esposito following a stellar performance) finds Eddie and Susie advancing their potential billion-dollar drug empire while Susie’s father, Bobby Glass, and Stanley Johnston are sent to prison.

As Bobby and Stanley share a cell in the finale, they begin to organize an unknown plan that could inform the plot of Season 2. Although Johnston’s sophisticated side indicates he is not long for prison life, the finale ends with Bobby assuring his American partner that he’s “Spoken like a true Gentleman.” The devious glint in their eyes and portentous tone in Bobby’s voice indicate these two are cooking something special for Eddie and Susie. Scodelario, who portrays Susie, entertained a potential plot point moving forward, telling Netflix:

“They’re either going to partner up and run everything, or Stan is going to be Bobby’s little b**ch.”

Although Netflix hasn’t renewed The Gentlemen for Season 2 yet, the show was envisioned to continue past the first 8 episodes. If Season 2 of The Gentlemen does get produced, all eyes turn to Eddie and Susie continuing their drug business while Bobby and Stanley presumably plot revenge. Stay close for future updates.
