I Know What You Did Last Summer
    legacy sequel.
  • Hewitt expresses mixed emotions about reprising her role as Julie James in the franchise.
  • The legacy sequel is scheduled for a 2025 release, with director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson attached.

Universal’s plans for a legacy sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer seem to be progressing nicely according to star Jennifer Love Hewitt, who says there have been “preliminary phone calls” regarding her return to the franchise. Hewitt starred as Julie James in the original I Know What You Did Last Summer, which was released in 1997, and reprised the role again in 1998 for the sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. The legacy sequel will be the fourth film in the franchise thus far, following the straight-to-DVD release in 2006, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer.

Speaking with ET about her return to the role that helped catapult her to superstardom, Hewitt said she’s “honestly terrified” about reprising the part of Julie James. While things don’t seem to be set in stone just yet regarding her return, she comments that if everything does fall into place, she isn’t sure how she’s going to feel. Check out her comments below.

“It honestly is wild to even think about. If it truly comes together
I don’t even know how I’m gonna feel except extremely overwhelmed and grateful
, but it’s wild to think about… It’s nice to know that people are excited at the possibility. I think it would be really fun if it came together.”

Still, even with those nervous feelings, the 45-year-old actress who has been active since 1989 is approaching things in a different light this time around thanks to having a few more years of experience under her belt. She says she’s “excited” to introduce audiences to a Julie James that is “grown up.”

I think there’s power in being older
. There’s power in having gone off and had three kids. There’s a sense of, like, I can do anything now. The vulnerability that was Julie James in one and two definitely doesn’t exist in this one.
I’m excited to just show her grown up
.”

I Know What You Did Last Summer 4 Is Slated for a 2025 Release

While there’s no official word yet on whether Jennifer Love Hewitt or Freddie Prinze Jr. have signed on to reprise their respective roles of Julie James and Ray Bronson, Universal has slated the legacy sequel for a release date of July 18, 2025, which is a promising sign. The film will be directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who’s best known for co-writing Thor: Love and Thunder, and helming the black comedy, Do Revenge. It’s unclear at this point if she will also have a hand in penning the script, or if those duties will go to someone else.
