Lewis Pullman (Top Gun: Maverick) stars in the darkly funny new mystery thriller Skincare, which is now playing in theaters. He plays an eccentric and ambitious influencer-type named Jordan who wants to help his renowned beautician pal, Hope (played by Elizabeth Banks), when a competing salon opens across the street from her business. It’s a rich role and could be Pullman’s finest performance to date – and he drew from a boy band pop singer for it. Back when Pullman’s real-life actor dad, Bill Pullman, was starring in high-profile films like Independence Day, there was a surge of boy bands emerging, some of whom are still active and making headlines today.

Lewis Pullman opened up to MovieWeb about how he tried to impersonate a certain boy-band star in preparing for his Skincare. “I was, at the time, in New Mexico working on Outer Range, and so I was going on hikes and sending [director Austin Peters] all these different [videos]and trying to find [the character’s] voice, and trying to find if his voice changed when he became this kind of like influencer person,” explained Pullman, who added:

For some reason, I was like, ‘I want him to sound kind of like Justin Timberlake.’ But then on the day, I think, when I came in, I was going way too hard with the Justin Timberlake, and Austin was like, ‘OK, crank it down a little bit.’

So you still hear little slivers of J.T. in there,” continued Pullman. “I just thought he has such a good, kind of smooth, kind of seductive way, that I thought maybe Jordan would think that’s really cool, and I’m going to try and copy that or something. But maybe I was doing it too much.”

Moviegoers who have spotted Lewis Pullman in recent hits like Lessons in Chemistry and Top Gun: Maverick will be in for a treat to see the rising star tackle such a different kind of persona in Skincare. “It definitely felt like a change of pace,” he told us, adding:

There was so many different directions it could go in, I feel like, and I just was really drawn to this idea of a person who is sort of a drifter. There’s a lot you can’t tell whether it’s true or not…

Lewis Pullman and Luis Gerardo Méndez also star in a satirical Hollywood tale about competing beauty salons that’s loosely inspired by real events.

“There are parts where he’s very successful at this game that he’s running, and then there’s parts where he’s not so successful,” continued Pullman, also mentioning a fun little deleted scene we hope to see down the line:

“There was some stuff in the movie, I think, t
hat was cut just for time
, but you get to learn a little bit more about Jordan, and you get to learn about where he came from. And it was a great moment… I can see why it was cut, because you don’t really know, actually, if it’s true or not.”

“And so it was kind of fun to be able to go into these layers of like, ‘Well, maybe Jordan is so good at what he does because he almost believes it,'” said Pullman. “And so then there’s all these meta layers of like, ‘Well, it doesn’t matter if it’s true or not because he believes it to be true, and he’s convinced himself that it is true in order to convince other people.’ So it’s all those like layers of that minutia that was, like, really fun to dig into.” From IFC Films, Skincare is now available exclusively in theaters.
