Masters of the Universe Multiverse Possibilities Addressed by Producer

Summary

  • The concept of a multiverse has been present in franchises like Marvel since the 1960s, so it’s not a new idea.
  • Masters of the Universe has the potential for a multiverse, with different versions of Castle Grayskull in alternate realities.
  • DC Comics has already featured crossover universes with Masters of the Universe.

When it comes to deciding what is and what is not canon in any franchise, it has seemingly been made a lot easier in recent years, with multiverse theories being applied to many franchises when someone decides to try a new angle that doesn’t quite fit with what came before. That is something that Masters of the Universe: Revolution’s executive producer Rob David has recently addressed in relation to the world of He-Man, and the possibility that we could see a He-Man multiverse emerge in the future.

Although there are some moviegoers who believe that the arrival of the multiverse to franchises such as the MCU is something new, it couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, Marvel’s own multiverse was originally introduced all the way back in 1962, in an issue of Strange Tales that saw Fantastic Four’s Johnny Storm teleport to the Fifth Dimension. Even the Masters of the Universe has always been just a door away from the multiverse, as David explained recently to SFX Magazine.

“In the comic books we had a room inside Castle Grayskull that’s full of doors, and every door leads to a different Grayskull in a different reality. All the multiversal realms of Eternia, including the CG animated show for kids, are just a doorway away. The joy of having a myth like MOTU that has spoken to so many generations is it’s like jazz, being able to do variations on the theme. They’re all inherently MOTU, they all have the same resonance and thematics, but they’re told a whole different way. It’s the greatest playdate any of us has had in this business.”

When it comes to big screen crossovers, there have been several notable movies that have delivered a collision of previously separate worlds, such as Alien vs Predator, Freddy vs Jason and, most recently, Godzilla vs Kong. Last year, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts appeared to introduce the G.I. Joe toy line to the robots in disguise’s world, although where that goes is yet to be seen. However, there does seem to be a more wide-spread acceptance of this type of crossover than ever, and Masters of the Universe has its fair share that could happen in the future.

Currently, fans are waiting eagerly to discover whether MGM can finally get a live-action reboot of Masters of the Universe off the ground after many years in limbo. If that movie does come to fruition, and furthermore becomes a success, then there are several other prominent IPs that could be drawn into the world of He-Man.

As part of DC’s run of Masters of the Universe comic books, He-Man and Skeletor have found themselves sharing the page with the likes of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, as well as another ‘80s cartoon that is proving elusive in the live-action format, Thundercats. With comic-lover James Gunn now being in control of DC Studios, and Warner Bros. seemingly in the mood for collaboration at the moment, it would certainly be interesting to see whether this kind of crossover event could ever happen on the big screen.

For now, fans will just have to make do with Kevin Smith’s animated series on Netflix as they await news on He-Man’s possible return to a live-action movie for the first time since Dolph Lundgren held aloft the Power Sword in 1987’s cult classic Masters of the Universe.
