Top Gun: Maverick star and newly appointed leading man Glen Powell is not particularly interested in taking on a superhero role…except, maybe, one. Speaking with GQ about the prospect of joining the pantheon of superheroes, Powell revealed that he would jump at the chance to don the iconic cape and cowl of Batman for James Gunn’s DCU. And says his take would be much more Michael Keaton and much less Matt Reeves…
“I was always a Batman guy. I would have a wild take on Batman. It definitely would not be like a Matt Reeves tone – it’d probably be closer to Keaton.”
While Powell has been a working actor for some time, with his career beginning way back as a child actor in Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over before starring in the likes of The Expendables 3, Everybody Wants Some!!, Hidden Figures, and Set It Up, it was his role in Top Gun: Maverick alongside Tom Cruise that finally made both studios and audiences stand up and take notice.
Now that his name has risen to the A-list, many have been wondering when (and if) he will ever join one of the blockbuster superhero franchises that now dominate Hollywood. While it sounds like he is trying to avoid such a thing, like many actors, who would not be able to resist the offer of playing The Dark Knight.
At present, it is unknown who will put on the mask for the DCU’s Batman: The Brave and the Bold, with the likes of Reacher star Alan Ritchson having also expressed his desire for the role. Glen Powell Offers Promising Update on Long-Awaited Captain Planet Movie
Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell and producer Leonardo DiCaprio have been trying to make a Captain Planet movie since 2018.
Not only does he have a history with Batman, Powell also now has one with Superman. Revealing that he has never auditioned for the Man of Steel, the actor heaped praise on David Corenswet, with whom Powell will star alongside in the upcoming disaster movie Twisters.
“But I was on the set of Twisters with [newly-anointed Clark Kent] David Corenswet when he got the call. He’s a hustler and he deserves it.”
Twisters finds Powell starring opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos in the legacy sequel, which follows on from the 1996 movie, Twister. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung with a screenplay by Mark L. Smith from a story by Joseph Kosinski, Twisters is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 19, 2024.
