Netflix Reveals Squid Game Season 2 Release Date & Major Season 3 News

It’s official, Squid Game season 2 is returning in 2024. More specifically, the second season of the South Korean phenomenon will premiere exclusively on Netflix on December 26, 2024. The announcement was made by showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk, who also revealed more exciting news about the future of the series after season 2…it will end with an already approved season 3, which will air sometime in 2025. Squid Game is the Netflix phenomenon that was released back in 2021 and smashed every record in the industry. It became Netflix’s most-watched series after a brief run, so, of course, talks about a follow-up began rather quickly.

You can check out the official announcement video vleow, which takes aim the ongoing Olympic games.

As reported by Deadline, Squid Game season 2 will bring back Lee Jung-jae (who recently played Sol in the Star Wars series The Acolyte) as Seong Gi-hun for the continuation of his journey. In season 1, random people received an invitation to play a game where they could win ₩45.6 billion, solving every financial issue they had. The problem was that, out of 456 players, only one winner could remain, and the rest were discarded in gruesome ways. The challenges resembled a deadly version of children’s games, with the caveat that losing meant dying.

This time, Seong Gi-hun will go after those involved with the sick, twisted titular game. Lee Byung-hun will also return in his role as The Front Man, the game’s leader. The rest of the cast includes Park Sung-hoon, Yim Si-wan, Park Gyu-young, Kang Ha-Neul, Yang Dong-geun, Jo Yu-ri, and Kang Ae-sim, among others.

More specific details of the plot for season 2 remain under wraps, but creator Hwang Dong-hyuk cannot wait to drag audiences back into the “surreal” world of Squid Game. You can read his statement below:

“It’s been almost three years since Season 1 was met with incredible response around the world and many unimaginable events took place. On the first day we began shooting Season 2, I remember thinking, ‘Wow, I can’t believe I’m back in the world of
Squid Game.’
It almost felt surreal. I wonder how it will feel for you to be back in
Squid Game
after three years as well.”

Hwang did go on to reveal a few details about the plot for season, 2 as well as teasing the third and final season:

“Seong Gi-hun who vowed revenge at the end of Season 1 returns and joins the game again. Will he succeed in getting his revenge? Front Man doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent this time either. The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale with Season 3, which will be brought to you next year. I am thrilled to see that the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story. We’ll do our best to make sure we bring you yet another thrill ride.”
