Next time you’re sitting down to watch a movie on Netflix, you can grab a bag of popcorn also produced by Netflix. Netflix is the latest brand to release its own popcorn bags. Per Variety, the popular streaming service company is teaming with Popcorn Indiana for the new line of “Now Popping” snacks. There are two flavors to start with — “Cult Classic Cheddar Kettle” and “Swoonworthy Cinnamon Kettle.” Each flavor is available for $4.49 for an eight-ounce bag.

The release of the new popcorn flavors is not a sign that Netflix is expecting to make a great amount of revenue by selling snacks. Instead, this is more about increasing brand awareness in retail outlets. Netflix is continuing its plans to branch out from consumers’ electronic devices and into the real world, as the company recently announced plans to launch “Netflix House” entertainment, restaurant, and retail complexes.

Netflix addressed its new line of popcorn in a statement when naming its top streaming hacks and tips. Check out their full statement below:

“Because a movie night and popcorn go together like a hot dog and a bun, ice cream and sprinkles, or a beach day and a lounge chair. That’s why Netflix and Popcorn Indiana have teamed up to debut Now Popping, a new ready-to-eat popcorn line available to snack on now. Look for flavors like Cult Classic Cheddar Kettle and Swoonworthy Cinnamon Kettle at Walmart stores nationwide.”

Netflix Competes with AMC for the Streaming SmackDown and Taste Buds Throwdown

AMC released its own line of popcorn in 2021, making the kitchen pantry the latest battlefield that Netflix is competing on against the established movie theater chain. AMC has both microwavable bags of popcorn and ready-to-eat bags for a four-ounce bag of popcorn, Walmart has AMC listed at $3.98 per bag. So, while there may be more choices on store shelves from AMC, Netflix appears to be offering a more budget-friendly option — more pop for the price tag. AMC has also partnered with delivery services such as Uber Eats for customers to be able to have their favorite movie theater popcorn in the comfort of their own home by getting it delivered straight from the theater.

Netflix has dabbled in the movie theater game, signing a lease agreement to help keep New York’s Paris Theater open and helping to restore the Egyptian Theater in Los Angeles. Netflix purchased the theater in 2020, intending to use the theater to host special events, screenings, and premieres.

As the movie theater industry continues to attempt to recover from the global pandemic and a cultural shift in the way that movie-watchers choose to consume content, Netflix is looking to stay one step ahead of the game by banking on some of the certainties in the movie industry. The way that we all watch movies may be changing, but the combination of popcorn and a good movie never goes out of style.

Netflix’s “Now Popping” snacks can be purchased at Walmart.
