SEAL Team Is Ending with Season Seven Because of David Boreanaz’s Health

David Boreanaz has been one of the hardest-working television actors in the business ever since getting his big break on Buffy the Vampire Slayer in 1997. Looking at his output since becoming everyone’s favorite vampire cursed with a soul, Boreanaz has worked consistently across hit TV series after hit TV series without even much of a break. His latest series, SEAL Team, is ending after a seven-season run and the actor is revealing that his body is the main reason the show is coming to an end. The next episode airs Aug. 18; the series finale will drop Oct. 6.

During a chat with People, Boreanaz spoke about the ending of SEAL Team. Because he and the other actors were so dedicated to making sure the series was as authentic as possible, it began to take a toll on his body physically. The show is known for intense military-style action scenes, which requires taxing training to get the scenes just right. The actor said, “My body just can’t do it anymore,” and then described a specific moment that showcases just how grueling filming the series could be:

“Ten feet in, I hit a rock, and my ankle twists, and I fall flat down. My ankle is ballooning, but I had to keep going. You learn from the SEALS how to push through pain. I’m talking guys who have had their arm blown off and are cracking jokes because that’s how they deal with it. It’s very intense. I take good care of myself, but it gets to a point where your body’s not moving like it used to… I think I’ve had four MRIs in the past four months, for my knees, hips, shoulders. It’s been quite a journey.”

SEAL Team Began Its Life on CBS

The 55-year-old actor plays Master Chief Special Warfare Operator Jason Hayes on SEAL Team, serving as the leader of Bravo Team. Created by Benjamin Cavell, the show follows Bravo Team, known as an elite unit of Navy SEALS, as they embark on dangerous missions on a worldwide scale. The missions are typically given with little notice and the series showcases how the job also takes a toll on their families. SEAL Team began its life on CBS in 2017 but was moved to the Paramount+ streaming service in 2021. Altogether, seven seasons and 107 episodes have been produced of the series.

Boreanaz truly hasn’t slowed down since his time on Buffy the Vampire Slayer in 1997. The actor played Angel in the hit supernatural series from 1997-1999 until he left for his very own spinoff. Angel ran for five seasons and 110 episodes until 2004, but instead of taking a break after that, the actor quickly found himself playing FBI Special Angel Seeley Booth on the Fox procedural Bones, which ran from 2005-2017 for 12 seasons and 246 episodes. After Bones wrapped, Boreanaz took on SEAL Team in 2017, which is just ending its run.

All the shows that Boreanaz has starred in have had devoted fan followings, but none might be as strong as the genre fans who loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. Not one to scoff at the shows that made him a star, the actor admitted that his spinoff in particular was “complex” and went on to say, “Angel I think is still one of those shows that is still underrated. It was a very adult-themed exploration of action stuff. Both of those shows will live on.” Boreanaz also thinks it would be interesting to explore the character again, saying:

“You have the cult world that loves Buffy and Angel, they love the fantasy world, they love the portals and the makeup and all the fantasy worlds.
It’s definitely something that would be interesting to tap back into, that world, that environment.
”
