She-Hulk Could Reportedly Get a Second Season Despite Tatiana Maslany’s Discouraging Comments

Summary

  • The future of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law‘s second season is uncertain due to budget constraints, according to actress Tatiana Maslany.
  • Despite a mix of critical acclaim and fan criticism, the show’s unique tone and execution received praise.
  • She-Hulk may continue to appear in future theatrical MCU releases, as confirmed by Kevin Feige.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law was one Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated Disney+ shows of 2022, but like many other recent Marvel projects, it failed to hit the mark for many fans. While the series ended with many loose threads for future MCU projects to pick at, the question of whether a second season will happen is something that is still up for debate. Despite actress Tatiana Maslany suggesting that the show will never get another run out, this may not quite be true.

During Codenames LIVE! The New Class (via CBR), Maslany made the suggestion that Disney shut down the possibility for She-Hulk’s expensive reappearance on Disney+. When asked about season 2’s chances, she said:

I don’t think so. I think we blew our budget, and Disney was like, ‘No thanks,’

The series, which had a substantial budget of $225 million for its first season, faced a mix of critical acclaim and fan criticism, so the idea of Disney wanting to throw more money at new episodes is not that far-fetched. However, several rumors from 2023 suggesting that Marvel Studios is planning a second season of She-Hulk could still be true as a new report by io9 has claimed the return of She-Hulk is being “re-evaluated” rather than completely abandoned – at least for now.

According to a source, the comments made by Maslany are “accurate” but “lacking context.” The report goes on to say that following Bob Iger’s Disney return, the shake up of Marvel Studios’ spending and fast-tracking of multiple projects is still being felt, and there are some projects that are still not completely out of the picture. The report concludes:

So while Marvel works everything out, it’s not that a second season of She-Hulk has been completely abandoned. It just seems less likely than not at the moment.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law follows the story of Jennifer Walters, a single 30-something attorney and the cousin of Bruce Banner, who, thanks to a blood transfusion from her frequently angry relative, discovers she has gained his Hulk abilities. The character of She-Hulk has been a part of the Marvel Comics universe since 1979, and is known for her intelligence, strength, and unique perspective as a superpowered lawyer. Like another popular Marvel character, Deadpool, She-Hulk is known to break the fourth wall in her comics, and this was something that accompanied her into the MCU show. However, the series took a turn that went even beyond this, as the season finale saw Jennifer speaking to the robotic overlord of the MCU, “Kevin”, and spending ten minutes ripping into the franchise as though she was an X/Twitter user.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law became an enigma of its own making, with audience criticisms of the show’s CGI being countered by awards nominations and a win for its visual effects, and praise for the unique tone and execution of the show standing alongside a 32% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

However, despite this, and even if Maslany’s comments turn out to be correct, it is probably not the last we have seen of Jennifer Walters and her green alter-ego, as Kevin Feige has previously said that She-Hulk will make an appearance in at least one theatrical MCU release in the future.

Fans of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law can stream the entire first season on Disney+
