The Crow 2024

Bill Skarsgård takes on the iconic role of THE CROW in this modern reimagining of the original graphic novel by James O’Barr. Soulmates Eric (Skarsgård) and Shelly (FKA twigs) are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.

Before audiences see Huston’s portrayal in either of those films, he can be seen in the newly released The Dead Don’t Hurt. While speaking to ComicBook while promoting the Viggo Mortensen-directed western drama, Huston opened up about the difficulty of starring in remakes of iconic films.

“What I find challenging is, in a way, the idea of remaking something that’s already good. It’s like you kind of don’t want to touch it. You want to leave it alone. I remember my father saying, ‘Why are we remaking good movies? We should be remaking the bad ones and make them good.’ So that’s where you’re cautious. And yet you have to kind of reinvent it. You can’t imitate it. But you’re inspired by it and that’s the tough balance to get.”

Huston’s participation in the upcoming The Naked Gun reboot was announced just weeks ago; the movie is slated for a July 18, 2025 release. Akiva Schaffer will direct the film; Huston stars alongside Liam Neeson, Paul Walter Hauser, Kevin Durand, Pamela Anderson, Busta Rhymes, and current WWE Champion Cody Rhodes. It is based on the action comedy film series of the same name that starred Leslie Nielsen.

While Hollywood Studios are loving a good nostalgia reboot right now, audiences’ relationships with new versions of old movies are a little more complicated. The Crow is a prime example. After Lionsgate dropped a trailer for the upcoming film, the video was flooded with dislikes. While some fans, excited by Skarsgård’s involvement, were cautiously optimistic, others seemed disappointed with the film, as they remain deeply attached to the original, mourning Brandon Lee’s tragic death and his iconic performance.

Following the trailer’s negative attention, the original film’s director, Alex Proyas, released a statement:

“I really don’t get any joy from seeing negativity about any fellow filmmakers work. And I’m certain the cast and crew really had all good intentions, as we all do on any film. So it pains me to say any more on this topic, but I think the fan’s response speaks volumes. THE CROW is not just a movie. Brandon Lee died making it, and it was finished as a testament to his lost brilliance and tragic loss. It is his legacy. That’s how it should remain.”

The job of reassigning the titular role of The Crow is enough to drive casting directors to a mental breakdown.

Ernie Hudson, who played Sergeant Daryl Albrecht in the original film, shared his perspective on the 2024 version, as well. Despite his admiration for Skarsgård, he made it clear that he would not be watching this iteration. In his view, “The Crow is Brandon Lee.'”
