The Old Guard 2 Finally Gets Promising Update From Charlize Theron

Oscar winner and Mad Max: Fury Road star Charlize Theron has teased the long-awaited release of the Netflix action sequel, The Old Guard 2, declaring that it is coming “soon.” The first The Old Guard was a major hit for the streamer when it was released back in 2020, and while the follow-up completed filming in 2022, we have all been waiting ever since for it to debut. Now, speaking with Variety, Theron explains why The Old Guard 2 has taken so long to be released, and teases how it will be even better than its predecessor, saying, “I really love this movie.”

“Netflix went through quite a changeover. We got kind of stuck in that and our post-production shut down, I think, five weeks into it.”

Changes at the top of Netflix and last year’s actors and writers strikes have sadly kept The Old Guard 2 locked in the vault, but Theron says there was never any risk of the comic book movie sequel being shelved. The acclaimed actress is now “really excited” about seeing the movie hit the streaming platform at long last.

“They were going through a lot of changes, and I totally understand it. We finally picked it back up and I’m really excited about it.

It’s really good. It’s a really important film to us. I only wanted to do it if we could make it amazing. I really love this movie.”

What Do We Know About The Old Guard 2?

Based on the graphic novel by writer Greg Rucka, The Old Guard was released on Netflix in 2020 and follows a group of mercenaries led by Charlize Theron. Of course, this is no ordinary group of mercenaries. They are all centuries-old immortals with the ability to heal themselves. The first outing centers on the group as they discover that someone is onto their secret, forcing them to fight to protect their freedom. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, written by Greg Rucka, and starring Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Harry Melling, Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, The Old Guard proved to be a major hit for the streaming giant and was met with largely positive reviews as well as being viewed by 72 million households over its first four weeks.

Plot details for The Old Guard 2 remain under wraps, but we can look for clues in the source material. Comic book sequel The Old Guard Book Two: Force Multiplied was released back in 2020 by Image Comics, and finds Andy (played in the adaptation by Theron) confronting the “sins of the past” and faced with “the last person” she expected to ever see again, who “returns to challenge not only what Andy believes in, but what the team is willing to fight for.”

The Old Guard 2 will see Charlize Theron reprise her role as Andy, with original cast members KiKi Layne, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Marwan Kenzari also returning for more immortal action. Kill Bill star Uma Thurman and Snake Eyes’ Henry Golding join the cast in undisclosed roles. Victoria Mahoney takes over directing duties from Gina Prince-Bythewood, with the script once again written by Greg Rucka.
