Todd McFarlane Doesn’t Really Care About Deadpool & Wolverine Homage

As well as providing dozens of fan-service cameos featuring beloved Marvel characters, Deadpool & Wolverine also pays homage to the comics that made the movie possible. During the montage where Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) traverses timelines in search of a new Wolverine (Hugh Jackman, and, briefly, Henry Cavill), Reynolds and director Shawn Levy slipped in several nods to popular comics featuring Deadpool and Logan. Todd McFarlane, the creator of Spawn and a beloved writer on The Incredible Hulk series of comics, hadn’t seen Deadpool & Wolverine but was told that his comic book cover was honored in the movie, and his reaction was hilarious.

Speaking with ComicBook, Todd McFarlane gave a lovingly nonchalant response about his work appearing in the new MCU movie, and reacted with much more indifference than the interviewer was expecting. McFarlane said he’s always appreciative when other shows and movies reference his comics, but it’s not something he pays attention to, and also revealed that those closest to him seem to get more excited than he does. McFarlane explained:

“Every now and then, people will tell me that there’s something in a TV show or a movie — even sometimes I’m a Jeopardy! question. You don’t know it’s coming, so it catches you a little bit off guard. You go, ‘Okay, I didn’t have anything to do with it, so I don’t know.’ I find that the neighbors get more excited, right? They’ll come knocking on the door: ‘Did you see The Big Bang Theory last night? They mentioned you.’
I’ve said before, I’m bored of me. Why am I relevant 30 years later?
It’s an odd thing to me. But, thank you.”

Todd McFarlane’s Spawn Is Being Rebooted

Todd McFarlane’s Incredible Hulk cover has become one of the most timeless comic book covers of all time, being recreated across various Marvel and DC Comics runs, including a run of Deadpool. However, to comic book casuals who may not be aware of Todd McFarlane’s work, his contributions to the medium go far beyond the beloved cover. McFarlane is the creator of Spawn, a fan-favorite comic book character with supernatural powers.

Owned by McFarlane’s publishing company Image Comics, Spawn was adapted into a live-action movie in 1997, starring Michael Jai White as the titular hero. Despite poor reviews, Spawn has become a cult classic among contemporary fans, and like many cult comic book movies (looking at you, The Crow), Spawn is getting the reboot treatment.

A Spawn remake has been in the works for years, never quite moving beyond early development. King Spawn is currently searching for a director as the script is nearing completion. Produced by Blumhouse, the new movie currently has no actors attached. It was previously reported that Jamie Foxx was tapped for the leading role, but the actor hasn’t confirmed if he remains involved in the movie.
