I Know What You Did Last Summer Reboot Loses Camila Mendes

The much talked about reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer has already lost its star in Camila Mendes thanks to her commitment to appear in the reboot of another franchise, Masters of the Universe. The Riverdale actress was cast earlier this year in the horror movie as one of the leads alongside Outer Banks’ Madelyn Cline, and it remains unclear at this point if someone else will be able to slide into her spot, or if the project will have to be put on hold for a rewrite, thus calling into question its reported release date of July 2025.

Per Deadline, Mendes’ role in Masters of the Universe conflicted with I Know What You Did Last Summer, causing the star to drop out of the project. She’d already committed to the Amazon MGM/Mattel film first, where she’ll take on the role of Teela, a.k.a. She-Ra, the Captain of Eternia’s Royal Guard responsible for protecting Nicholas Galitzine’s Prince Adam (He-Man).

Though it lingered in development hell for years, the reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer was officially greenlit in February 2023, with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) serving as director, and Leah McKendrick (Scrambled) penning the script. Mendes and Cline were announced to star in the project alongside Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Hauer-King, and while nothing has been officially confirmed, original stars Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt are also expected to appear in the reboot.

What Is the I Know What You Did Last Summer Reboot About?

While major plot details for the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot remain under wraps, it has been confirmed by Robinson that it will incorporate I Still What You Did Last Summer into its story, while thankfully ignoring the straight-to-DVD 2006 sequel, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer. In an interview given with Collider earlier this year, the director also revealed that social media will play a big factor in the reboot’s plot.

“At its core, I think it
really
reckons with some big ideas about hero and villain, right and wrong, how your skeletons come back to haunt you. And in the age of the internet and the age where fame is such a revered concept, the creation of TikTok and social media, who is Julie James in a world where there are no secrets anymore?”

She wouldn’t reveal much more than that, but did comment that “I think if you’re an OG fan like me and you, I think you’re gonna be happy. I think you’re gonna get it.”

As to how Mendes’ exit from the film will affect its schedule, we’ll have to wait to find out. Much like 2022’s Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer was looking to feature a young cast surrounded by legacy veterans, so how it moves on from here will be an interesting development to follow. We’ll have more news on the project, including Mendes’ replacement, as it becomes available.
