Lord Voldemort, the soulless dark wizard in Harry Potter, who struck fear into nearly everyone in the Wizarding World and has managed to creep his way into plenty of nightmares for many years, is one of the most iconic movie villains of all time. With his reptilian-like face, his swift and unsettling movements, and his calm yet menacing voice, there is no wonder as to why people were terrified to even utter his name due to their fear that he would materialize and murder them.

Those who have read the novels and/or seen the Harry Potter films know that Lord Voldemort has always had a dark side to him — even when he was just a young boy in an orphanage — but new light has been shed about him having a daughter. For those who do not know, the original author of the Harry Potter books teamed up with Jack Thorne and John Tiffany to create a stage production called Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. One particular character in the play caught the attention of many fans: Delphini Diggory, Voldemort’s daughter. She is every bit as evil and manipulative as her father, but the nature of her existence has raised some questions.

While fans can accept this new villainous addition to the Harry Potter franchise, we cannot help but wonder how this character came to be. Did the Dark Lord sneak away and have a secret love affair? Was she conceived the same way Tom Riddle was, that is, through a love potion? Or, did Voldemort have a weak spot for his most loyal Death Eater? Read on to see if Lord Voldemort had a secret love interest in the Harry Potter franchise.

Lord Voldemort’s Upbringing as Tom Riddle

Before Lord Voldemort became the sinister Dark Lord of the Wizarding World, he was a “regular” person named Tom Riddle, who just happened to be half-wizard on his mother’s side. Unfortunately, due to horrible circumstances, Tom was left at an orphanage right after his birth, and it was there that he grew up feeling like he was different from the other children. Childish mischief turned into real trouble as he was stealing things from others and realizing his magical powers. When Dumbledore introduced him to the magical world and explained that Tom had a big future ahead of him (assuming he was willing to take on the responsibility and change his ways), the elder wizard knew there was something brewing behind the young man’s steely gaze.

Tom eventually attended Hogwarts, was sorted into the Slytherin house, and won over his teachers as he was a studious pupil, but very few realized he was taking in as much information as he could for his own malicious intent. When Tom learned about his parents’ relationship, something inside him broke. Tom’s mother was a witch who used a love potion to make a Muggle man fall in love with her. However, after the effects wore off, he abandoned her and his unborn child. From then on, Tom swore to himself that he would become greater than any Muggle, half-blood, witch, or wizard.

Voldemort’s Potential Love Interest

If Lord Voldemort lined up all of his evil Death Eaters and decided on who was the most loyal and devoted to him as well as his cause, Bellatrix Lestrange would easily be number one on that list. After Bellatrix graduated from Hogwarts and Voldemort began his rise in power, she and her husband, Rodolphus Lestrange, became Death Eaters. They agreed with Voldemort’s idea that wizards should only come from pure blood, and any Muggle-borns or half-bloods needed to be eradicated by whatever means necessary. Much like Voldemort, Bellatrix believed in torturous methods before slaying her enemies.

Throughout the Harry Potter movies as well as the books, fans can get a sense of just how devoted Bellatrix was to her leader, but she also knew her place among his army and did not think of herself as his equal in any way. In the final film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, Bellatrix runs over to Voldemort after he’s collapsed, and her tone is much more than just a loyal servant. Voldemort, on the other hand, dismisses her concern and pushes past to see if he’s murdered the Boy Who Lived once and for all. Bellatrix may have been married to Rodolphus, but her loyalty — and love — certainly lied with the Dark Lord. Everyone, including Rodolphus, knew it.

Just two years after the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, the author was back at the drawing board with her characters, but this time, she had a couple of other writers with her, and their creation would not be any ordinary book. She, Jack Thorne, and John Tiffany created a script for a play called Harry Potter and the Cursed Child that focused on Harry’s son’s adventures at Hogwarts. While this storyline was expected, the antagonist of the story was not. Instead of Malfoy’s son following in his father’s footsteps and antagonizing the Potters, a young girl by the name of Delphini Diggory was made out to be the villain of the story.

It is revealed that Delphini is actually the daughter of Bellatrix Lestrange and Lord Voldemort. Fans were shocked to discover this new addition to the franchise, but many gladly accepted her with an open mind. Sadly, the play does not go into great detail about how exactly Delphi was conceived or what relationship (if any) was had between Bellatrix and Voldemort, but plenty of people have speculated what exactly brought about this new addition. The consensus seems to be that there was a love potion involved.

Was There a Real Love Connection?

Warner Bros.

With Bellatrix’s very apparent feelings for Voldemort and the fact that the two share a child in the Harry Potter universe, people cannot help but wonder if Voldemort actually had a real love connection with his most faithful and psychotic servant. In short, the answer is no. There was no secret love interest in the Dark Lord’s life because Lord Voldemort was incapable of love. He himself was conceived through the use of a love potion, making fans believe that he could never understand the true gravity of the very real and very vulnerable feeling.

As he got older, there was no one around to express such a feeling, and Voldemort (who would have been called Tom Riddle at the time) sank deeper and deeper into an isolated place where only the idea of power comforted him. As he created Horcruxes, his soul was removed from his body, leaving no possibility for compassion, empathy, or a real connection with another individual. While love is not needed for two people to make a child, fans cannot even wrap their heads around Lord Voldemort getting physically involved with another individual, so magic had to have played a part in Delphi’s conception.
