Call of Duty’s Modern Warfare series has been a fan favorite for a very long time. It began with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007) and continued with two other entries, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011). These video games played a major role in popularising the first-person shooter genre and setting up the future of the franchise.

The sub-series was rebooted with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in 2019, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II in 2022, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III in 2023. However, this particular fan theory states otherwise. A Reddit user posted a theory on r/modernwarfare that the new Modern Warfare series is not a reboot but it is an alternate timeline where Vladimir Makarov is dead.

A user on Reddit who goes by the username u/xTGE_Youtube2019 posted a theory on r/modernwarfare. They claimed that the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series is not a reboot but an alternate timeline where Makarov was dead. This theory was posted in the subreddit in 2019 but has resurfaced on social media multiple times over the years.

The 2007 version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare didn’t allow the gamers to take out Vladimir Makarov in the mission One Shot, One Kill, however, the 2016 remastered version of the game had a secret option where players could take out Makarov and earn the trophy “Time Paradox.

As per this theory, by killing Makarov, players triggered a new timeline which was the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series while the normal timeline was the old Modern Warfare series where Makarov was alive.

Since the theory is old, many will oppose it by claiming that Makarov is alive in the latest game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2023). However, the theory can still be true since Activision chose to reboot the project entirely in Summer 2022, as per GameSpot.

As a result, the game was planned to be a rebooted version of the original Modern Warfare trilogy featuring Makarov. So, this could mean that the storyline in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022) were part of an alternate timeline where Makarov was killed.

Call of Duty is unarguably one of the most popular video game franchises of all time. Having sold over 400 million copies, it is verified by the Guinness World Records as the best-selling first-person shooter game series. One of the main reasons behind the success of the franchise is its engaging storylines. However, the latest game was criticized for its poor story, which can be justified as it was developed in a hurry.
