Criminal Record (2024) Season 1 Episode 3 Recap

[ad_1]

This recap of the Apple TV+ series Criminal Record season 1, episode 3, “Kids in the Park,” contains significant spoilers.

The Criminal Record episode “Kids in the Park” gets off to a tragic start. A drive-by shooting sends everyone running for their lives, except for Isaac Witlow, a small red-headed child. He was shot and is now in a coma. This is nothing new to the area. Per DS Kim Cardwell, there are 17 gangs that they know of.

Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty (Peter Capaldi) is on the scene. Detective Sergeant June Lenker (Cush Jumbo) was also present. Hegarty pays Lenker a compliment, ever so politely but also backhandedly, about the Burrowes murder. She looks at him with contempt as he walks away.

Later, Lenker approaches the activist, Sonya Singh. They have a deal. Lenker follows Hegarty to give Sonya information to help with the Errol Mathis murder. Sonya then helps the detective with the Hayes Lane caller. Sonya has been asking her activist volunteer “do-gooders” to hand out flyers. She now urges Lenker to look over the Errol case file with a professional eye.

Apple TV+’s Criminal Record Season 1 Episode 3 Recap: What does June visit Errol at Whitecross?

After looking over the case file, including a few of Errol Mathis’s moments on his criminal record, she notes that the murder is missing a motive. The issue of money isn’t plausible here. For one, it wouldn’t be smart because what does murdering a loved one do with multiple stab wounds? That will be a red flag for any life insurance carrier.

There is also very little evidence except for her blood on Errol’s side. This is why June visits Errol in prison. Sonya sits in the gallery. This way, Errol feels safe talking to her. She asks him about his alibi. Errol confirms and stands by. He was interviewing a man named Mustafa to work in his barbershop. However, he moved back to Turkey before anyone could talk to him.

Jules also goes over the confession. He denied the murder for two days, but on the third morning, he confessed. Errol tells Jules they had him on a lot of drugs. He then begins to ramble and looks like a man who is about to give up because there is no one bringing the victim back. Errol ends the interview after June mentions his son, Patrick. Sonya confirms she is worried Errol is done fighting.

How does Hegarty endanger June’s life?

Hegarty doesn’t alert June to an armed suspect. Jason Reeve is the man the police are looking for in the dry-by-hooting case. June is standing at a barricade to secure the location. Hegarty is sitting in a police surveillance van. Hegarty received a call from his detective, Sergeant Tony. He alerted him to the fact that June was in Whitecross today, interviewing Errol Mathis.

Perhaps worried about his legacy and future, Daniel allows the suspect to approach June while her back is turned. However, what Hegarty doesn’t know is that an underlying, Jed Stanning, is right behind him. He’s frozen in horror as well but manages to say weakly, “Sir?” Startled, Daniel then picks up the radio to warn June. She turns, and Jason has a hand in his pocket. She tells him to stop.

However, he pulls out a gun and opens fire. June dives behind a car. Miraculously, she’s not been hit. They catch the individual and the weapon. Hegarty gently warns Jed about not reporting the incident. He agrees reluctantly, without saying anything, knowing the power Hegerty has. June is asked to be at the press conference so she can “mirror” the community.

Criminal Record’s Season 1 Episode 3 Ending Explained: Why Does Hegarty Vouch for Patrick Burrowers?

We don’t know why Hegerty was able to drop the charges of Patrick Burrowes, but it’s a stunning revelation. The Criminal Record episode ends with June being told by a fellow detective that Patrick was arrested with seven others for being in possession of 300 grams of cocaine.

However, an officer who goes by the name of Glasgow shows up later. (We aren’t sure if the detective is referring to where the officer was located or if it’s their last name). The officer leaned on the detective and said, “he could vouch” for Patrick. In the scene, the officer who turns around is Hergerty.

Which leads us to this question: Why is Hegerty looking out for the son of a man he put away for murder?
