Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy has commented on the recent spate of unsuccessful MCU movies, saying you would have to have been living “under a rock” not to have noticed how the major franchise has been underperforming. After a decade-and-change of monumental success, the likes of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels have failed critically and at the box office, with the latter in particular causing big losses for the studio.

Speaking with Empire, Levy is hoping to reignite the Marvel Cinematic Universe with this year’s Deadpool & Wolverine and promises that the multiversal adventure will be “something different.”

“You’d have to live under a rock not to know that the last few Marvel movies have failed to ignite the world in the way that so many did. We do come along at an interesting time. And we are decidedly something different. Whether it is of Messianic proportions, time will tell.”

Marvel boss Kevin Feige has even revealed that some of the lines in Deadpool & Wolverine have “taken on more of a meaning” in the wake of recent failures. Particularly with Wade referring to himself as “Marvel Jesus.”

“Some of the lines that Ryan and his writers and Shawn worked on have taken on more of a meaning.”

Kevin Feige Is Looking Forward to Being the Underdog Again

Levy is not the only one to comment recently on the state of the MCU, with Feige himself having accepted that things are not as prosperous as they once were. For his part, he cannot wait to be an underdog again…

“It’s nice to be able to rally behind one feature project this year. I’m much more comfortable being the underdog. I prefer being able to surprise, and exceed expectations. So it does seem like the last year, which has not been ideal, has set us up well for that.”
