It’s been 6 years since that announcement, but it seems that somewhere in the background, the wheels are still turning on the Drago spin-off…just very slowly.

In a recent chat with ScreenRant, Lundgren shared some updates on the project, including more plot details and how Creed III is responsible for the Drago movie being pushed back. Lundgren said:

“MGM was developing the script called Drago about my character and my son. I think what happened was the studio changed leadership, and then Creed III did very well, so they started preparing for Creed IV. This is last year, and then now there is a problem with a co-star in Creed IV. That storyline they had on the Drago script was interesting, it was kind of a coming to America, kind of immigration angle, with me and the son, and it was pretty cool.

It just so happened that, in Creed II, we’re in the Ukraine, in the beginning, we’re in Kyiv. That’s where the movie opens, even though it’s not really mentioned too much. But in the version of the script that I read, it starts with a Russian invasion, and in that, we go through some hard, difficult experiences that makes us want to come to America. It was kind of interesting.”

The Future of the Rocky and Creed Franchises

After the enormous success of Creed III, director Michael B. Jordan assured fans that he is not done with the Creed universe. In fact, he already working on Creed IV and has ideas for some spin-offs. However, some of these ideas centered on Damian Anderson, the character played by Jonathan Majors in the 2023’s Creed III. This means that at least one spin-off may have to sit this one out.

Previously, Amazon Studios announced that a few of MGM’s biggest hits such as RoboCop would be getting new sequels or reboots, with another potential Rocky spin-off included in the list. Any Rocky project could depend on settling an argument with Sylvester Stallone over who really owns the rights to the Rocky franchise, which is something that Stallone has made no secret he is unhappy with.

Whether Lundgren’s return as Ivan Drago is part of the future of the Rocky franchise s something fans will have to wait a little longer to find out for certain, but no doubt the action hero will continue to let fans know what is happening every step of the way.
