Mean Girls Remake Slammed By “Hurt” Lindsay Lohan Over “Disgusting” Joke at Her Expense

[ad_1]

Summary

  • Lindsay Lohan is reportedly hurt and disappointed by a joke made at her expense in the Mean Girls musical remake.
  • The movie has been a box office success, exceeding expectations with over $40 million worldwide, but has faced criticism for its misleading marketing.
  • The mixed critical and audience responses to the remake highlight the challenges of Hollywood’s obsession with remakes and reboots.

Mean Girls has been gaining something of a mixed response from audiences – especially those who didn’t know that the film was a musical. However, it seems one person who has been less impressed than many is original Mean Girls star Lindsay Lohan. Despite appearing in the movie in a secret cameo, Lohan has reportedly been “hurt and disappointed” by a joke made at her expense.

In this updated musical version of the 2004 movie, Angourie Rice steps into the role of Cady, the role formerly played by Lohan. However, one scene, in which Megan Thee Stallion, playing herself, interacts with Rice’s character and cracks a joke that “Y2K fire crotch is back” has seemingly not gone down well with the OG star. The line is apparently a nod to a notorious 2006 TMZ video involving Brandon Davis calling Lohan “fire crotch.” Lohan’s reaction, as reported by People, has seen both her representative and her father weighing in on her behalf. Her rep said:

Lindsay was very hurt and disappointed by the reference in the film.

Michael Lohan, Lindsay’s father, was not quite so restrained in his assessment of the joke. According toTMZ, he said that he was “pissed” at the “disgusting comment,” and took aim at Meghan Thee Stallion herself, saying:

I will say this, however, NOBODY can replace Lindsay or the original cast in that film. Nor can Megan replace Lindsay in the new Planet Fitness commercial dressed like a stripper in a fitness commercial.

The reference was a jab at Megan Thee Stallion’s recent involvement in Planet Fitness commercials, a role Lindsay had previously been involved in.

Despite this controversy, the Mean Girls remake has been the topic of conversation since it hit cinemas last week. Released on January 12, the film quickly claimed the top spot at the box office, unexpectedly amassing over $40 million globally against a $36 million budget. However, the film has been criticized for its “misleading” marketing, which didn’t make it clear that the movie is a musical.

Critically, the movie holds a 69% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a mix of positive and moderate reviews. Interestingly, the audience score has also been middle-of-the-road with a 66% approval rate. For context, the original Mean Girls film, holds an 84% Rotten Tomatoes rating and a similar audience score, emphasizing that sometimes it is hard to beat a true cult classic.

Even though Mean Girls has been a commercial success, and brought fresh elements to the story, Lohan’s reaction and the mixed critical and audience responses have once again proven that Hollywood’s obsession with remakes and reboots is rough ground to tread.
