Mindy Kaling Hits 2024 Met Gala Red Carpet in Bold Gaurav Gupta Gown

Mindy Kaling turned heads at Monday’s Met Gala red carpet when she stepped out in a beige sculptural gown.

The multi-hyphenate wore a custom gown by Indian designer Gaurav Gupta. Kaling referred to Gupta as a “genius” in an on-the-carpet interview with Vogue.

“It makes me really happy to rep such talented geniuses who happen to be from my community,” Kaling said to Vogue of her gown and her jewelry, which was also created by an Indian designer.

The beautifully textured dress became an early favorite of the night. Kaling noted that the dress had a name — “The Melting Flower of Time.” While the structural front of the dress was a hit, the back of the dress truly made the dress stand out, emphasizing the name.

“If you look at the cape, you can see that it looks like a flower that was once blossoming is now melting,” Kaling pointed out to Vogue on the red carpet.

Last month, it was announced that Kaling would be returning to her Hulu roots with a new ensemble comedy series, Murray Hill. Kaling also has a Netflix series in the works starring Kate Hudson, inspired by the life of Los Angeles Lakers president Jeanie Buss.

This year’s dress code, “The Garden of Time,” takes its cue from the 1962 short story of the same name by J.G. Ballard, which dovetails nicely with the latest Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, which opens to the public on Friday, May 10. The Andrew Bolton-curated show spotlights fragile pieces from the institute’s archives, all viewed through a lens of nature. The exhibit’s coffee table book will be released on June 18.
